Dominican Republic
In Santiago de los Caballeros, the emergency medicine residency at Hospital Regional Jose Maria Cabral y Baez has been building point-of-care ultrasound into the daily care of its patients. Working alongside Dr. Ybel Fermin and the residency faculty, Atlas Global Health supported that effort together with a team from the University of Connecticut, including Dr. Robert Fuller, helping the program obtain ultrasound devices and delivering education designed with the local residency, for the local residency. The devices stayed. So did the teaching.
One partnership opened the door to another. In Santo Domingo, Dr. Marino Estrella and the emergency medicine residency at Hospital General Regional Dr. Marcelino Velez Santana were ready to do the same work in their own hospital. Atlas supported them in the same way, with a donation of devices and ultrasound education for their team. Their clinicians now use point-of-care ultrasound to support real-time clinical decisions every day.
Neither of these programs is ours. They belong to the residencies and the physicians who lead them. Atlas's part was to connect two strong local programs with the equipment, educators, and partners they asked for, and to back them as they built ultrasound into their own practice. The lesson of the Dominican Republic is a simple one: you do not always need to build something new. Sometimes the best move is backing a strong local program that is ready.
