Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea is where Atlas Global Health began, before Atlas existed. Working alongside the Papua New Guinea Society of Emergency Medicine and Water Hands Hope, a Hawaii based nonprofit, our founders helped build a portable ultrasound train-the-trainer program across five hospitals: Mt Hagen, Port Moresby, Kundiawa, Gerehu, and Porgera.
The point was never the workshops. Local physicians, including Dr. Junior McKup, learned ultrasound from the ground up, from physics and knobology to FAST exams, lung, cardiac, and obstetric ultrasound, and bedside procedures. Then they trained the next group themselves. The teaching stayed in the hospitals, with the people who work in them, and kept compounding after the visitors went home.
That experience became the model everything at Atlas has been built on since. One time workshops fade. Trainers and local champions do not. Atlas Global Health was founded in 2023 to work this way everywhere: local leaders in front, education that stays, and outside support that knows its place.
