Honduras
The emergency medicine residency at Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa is young, in its first months when Atlas first connected with it, and it is being built by the people who will run it. Under the leadership of Dr. Leo Alonso, the residency asked for two things as it formed: serious resuscitation training for its first trainees and a portable ultrasound of its own.
Project SEMILLA and the residency's own faculty led that effort on the ground, with support from Atlas Global Health and from Dr. Whitney Bryant's team at the University of Cincinnati, the same Cincinnati team working alongside the residency at Hospital Nacional Rosales in El Salvador. The training was hands-on and team based, because in a cardiac arrest nobody saves a life alone. The drills, the roles, and the repetition are what a new program keeps. Atlas also helped place a donated portable ultrasound with the residency, so its trainees can keep building those skills long after any visiting team has gone home.
This program belongs to Hospital Escuela and to the physicians building it. Atlas's part was to connect a new residency, at the moment it most needed support, with partners who could teach alongside its faculty and with equipment it could keep. Equipment matters. The training around it matters more, and that training now lives with the local team.
