At the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Moshi, the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center is still taking shape, and ultrasound is already at the center of it. Under the supervision of Dr. Francis Sakita, the program's residents and faculty are expanding and refining ultrasound practice in their emergency department, building it into a core diagnostic and procedural tool rather than an occasional one.
The training blends in-person and remote instruction, supported by collaborators on this work from the Global Health Division of UCLA Emergency Medicine, including Dr. Jacqueline Shibata and Dr. Erich Wieshofer, working alongside the KCMC faculty. That structure is the point. Because the education lives inside a residency, it does not leave when a visiting team flies home. Every new class learns ultrasound, practices it, and in time teaches it. The curriculum itself becomes the infrastructure, and it compounds year after year.
Atlas Global Health's part is to support and connect. We partnered with the UCLA Global Health Division team to stand alongside Dr. Sakita's program with educators, experience, and an ongoing remote relationship, in service of a goal the residency set for itself. The program, the curriculum, and the progress belong to Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center. A residency that owns its ultrasound education never needs another bootcamp.
