Peru
In February 2025, emergency medicine residents from three of Lima's national hospitals shared one classroom: Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo, Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza, and Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. They came together for an ultrasound bootcamp run by the Ondas de Latinoamérica team and led by Dr. Andrea Dreyfuss and Dr. David Martin. Atlas Global Health helped make the training possible by providing ultrasound devices for the hands-on sessions, which kept the residents at the bedside, building the diagnostic and therapeutic skills they use on their own patients.
What made this work worth backing was what already existed in Peru. The bootcamp did not arrive as an outside program. It plugged into the groundwork laid by Peru's own emergency medicine society, the Sociedad Peruana de Medicina de Emergencias y Desastres (SPMED), and into the universities that train these residents. Equipment and teaching that anchor to a local institution keep working after a course ends. Equipment and teaching that depend on a visit do not.
Atlas's part in Peru was a supporting one, deliberately. The residents, their hospitals, their universities, and their professional society are the durable infrastructure of emergency medicine in Peru. Our job was to give strong local educators better tools, and to help connect a regional teaching team, Ondas de Latinoamérica, with the people doing the work in Lima.
